Special Report: Uruguay Far From Ecuador and Food Sovereignty: GMO Moratorium Comes to an End, “Coexistence” Is Near

In July, 2008, a year and a half moratorium will possibly come to an end. This moratoriun was imposed by the Uruguayan administration on new genetically modified agricultural strains, in addition to the ones that already existed, as the case of soy, which effects are devastating in terms of soil impoverishment and the displacement of familiar production. The measure will be released a few days after the resolution of Ecuador´s Constituent Assembly was known, which bans GMOs. In May, Real World Radio informed about the intention of the Uruguayan authorities to accept the “coexistence” of transgenic and traditional agriculture. With the moratorium deadline near, this forecast may be confirmed, although the authorities remain hermetic.
