When drafting the new Consitution, the Ecuadorians seem to be getting closer to the struggle for the nationalization of fresh water carried out by different Latin American communities and peoples.
In April of 2000, residents of the Bolivian area of Cochabamba raised in defense of the right of the people to access water. They organized around the Coordination in Defense of Water and Life, made up by several social movements such as peasants, neighbors, factories federations, provincial civic committees to struggle to expel the company Aguas del Tunari.
The company, which is a consortium where Bechtel has most of the stocks, wanted to take control of the collective water systems and increase tariffs.
